St Augustine's and Market Hill
: the beacon on the left of the photo was erected in 1988 to
commemorate the 400th anniversary of the sighting of the Spanish
Armada. It is part of a national chain of beacons similar to
that which was used in 1588 to alert the local militia to the
arrival of the invading fleet, and has since been lit on a number
of occasions, notably the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 and
for the more local celebrations when the local communities banded
together to fight and defeat an American multinational company's
plans to erect a toxic waste incinerator near the town. |
