February 17th 2006 : Cheese and wine evening in the Town Hall: This meeting was convened to invite ideas for further fundraising. Numerous imaginative proposals came forward to involve the wider community in from sponsored cycle rides to scarecrow competitions; from country and western nights to school singing in church; from clay pigeon shoots to ploughing matches – the list was endless! Councillor John Dennis addressed the meeting as did Ivan, our vicar, also.

March 10th 2006 : Thorngumbald Choir. What a splendid evening of entertainment they gave us! The £185 raised from ticket sales was a useful addition to funds.

April 22nd 2006 : .The East Yorkshire Police Band: Again, this band infused a very well attended turnout with great enthusiasm as they presented a rousing programme. The conductor kept up a continuum of interesting comments between numbers which added much to the enjoyment. The solo playing was of a very high standard as was the whole performance especially the military pieces, (John Philip Sousa – evergreen as ever!). Proceeds amounted £405.

May 5th 2006 : Recital by Amy Black and Robert Markham. There can be few venues more suited to the glorious evening of musical entertainment given by this extremely talented duo. Amy Black was on top form for her wide ranging programme from Mozart arias to modern music from the shows. The ancient church must have rejoiced to be filled with such a volume of sweet sound! Amy introduced her programme with a mixture of erudition and good humour.
For those noting the piano accompaniment, they would have been greatly impressed by Robert Markham’s performance; it was peerless. His solo renditions of Beethoven and Chopin were moving and exhilarating and more than worthy of the little upright piano at his disposal. Wine and cheese were on offer after the concert which raised £1500.Much credit was due to Linda Black for the success of the evening.

Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th June : Gift Weekend and Open Day:
Over the past few days, a number of volunteers have trudged for miles around the streets, estates and closes of Hedon to deliver our leaflet appealing for funds in support of the restoration. They have risked finger ends from sometimes spiky, unfriendly letter boxes and occasionally, even more unfriendly snapping, terrieor dogs. We believe every household will now have had the opportunity to read these leaflets and make their own assessments.

Many of you will not yet have even been inside the remarkable building, St.Augustine’s, which has been at the centre of our community for centuries. Through the Summer it is open to visitors on Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon. When you pay a visit, you are sure to be surprised at what you find; besides the wealth of historical architecture, the tranquil atmosphere can give great relief from the feverish bustle of life outside.

The Quintessential concert will attract many visitors on the Saturday evening, (10th.June) and if any of those are returning gift envelopes, some church members, Ivan, our vicar, Tim Wigglesworth and Dorothy Winter will be there to receive them.

Additionally, Bamfords’ Electrical and Frames can receive gift envelopes during opening hours. Of course, they may also be safely handed in during the open weekend.

There have been a number of TV programmes promoting the needs of a variety of distressed buildings which have attracted many sympathetic viewers. We do hope that our own unique church building, nearer home and similarly threatened, will continue to get the support it needs through Gift Weekend.

Saturday, 10th June : Quintessentials Concert
Saturday had been a gloriously, sunny day and an almost capacity audience gathered in the welcome cool of St.Augustine's with the expectation of rounding off their day feasting on the fine-tuned harmony of a really talented group of singers. They were not to be disappointed.

The acoustics in the church were ideal for their wide-ranging performance which included early madrigal music, traditional songs and progressing later to some numbers from the shows.

After the concert, the group circulated with the audience to enjoy wine and canapes which had been sponsored by Mrs.Jean Johnson and served by her team of helpers. Jean had worked very hard to make the occasion the success which it was and was deserving of the highest praise. Comments on the evening, which raised a useful £760.00 for the Restoration Fund,.have been very favourable.

July 15th - 16th : Hedon Open Gardens :
The warm dry weather continued for Hedon's Open Gardens weekend, during which nineteen gardens were visited by large numbers even though several other events in the area competed for their attendance. On Sunday evening (July 16th) the event concluded in spectacular fashion vwith a barbecue at the home of Mr and Mrs Malcolm Coates. Proceeds amounted to £1,394 for the benefit of the Restoration Fund.

A car boot sale took place at the Haven Arms on Monday, 28th August. Kathryn Danby had put much effort into preparing this event and those attending were very enthusiastic about its outcome. At the last count, £293 was raised for the Church Restoration Fund.

Peter Godden's organ recital, (9th.September) was such a joy to listen to. His wife Alison, well described as the "Lincolnshire Nightingale" augmented his performance with a number of Faure' pieces. His finale, the well known Bach B minor Toccata and Fugue, was very effective and ended the evening in moving fashion. The event raised £320 for the Restoration Fund
