The first anniversary of the death of the Rev.WH (Bill) McLaren approaches and his inspired leadership in setting up the restoration and development appeal has been sadly missed. The urgent restoration and development needs of St.Augustine's are as pressing as ever and rather than through a committee, these are now being addressed through the PCC whose members remain as dedicated as ever.
The new facilities, two toilets and a refreshments servery, in the North transept have recently been completed and all are agreed that they will be a tremendous asset for the future. These have been provided through the generosity of a local bequest at a cost exceeding £30,000. The architectural style and the quality of workmanship in the facilities are a real credit to their creators. For photographs of the toilets and servery, click here. Proposed New Meeting Room in the South transept.
Ivan believes his mission would be greatly enhanced if a comfortable meeting room / church office was to be provided within the South transept. This room would have a number of functions particularly for education and smaller group activities when the vast space of the church interior would not be fully utilised. The Church Architect, Matthew Thomas attended a site meeting recently and after much discussion a provisional outline was agreed upon. He has agreed to present a model of his proposals in the near future.
Restoration Matters:
Phase Two of Restoration comprising work to the tower roof, the south chancel wall, drainage repairs, belfry window stonework and provision of a tower ringbeam at an estimated cost of c.£195,000 is about to go out to tender.

Saturday,19th.May : Jazz Concert 7.30pm in St.Augustines Church.
On the evening of Saturday, 19th.May a capacity audience enjoyed a concert given by The RevRay Jazz Trio. This concert came about from the combined efforts of Jean and Edward Johnson, Pat and Ray Gamble and June and Barry Beaumont and resulted in adding £7971 to the Restoration and Development Fund after £5400 of corporate sponsorships had been added to the concert surplus of £2571. There was great demand for the raffle prizes from the sale of £651 of tickets, the first prize winning a mini-cruise for four plus car on P&O North Sea Ferries. Tickets, at £10, bought an evening of rousing entertainment with a glass of wine and delicious “nibbles” prepared and served by the organisers and friends. Was it any wonder that the event was a sell-out weeks beforehand? Please check back at this page regularly, as updates will be posted as soon as I have them.
